Tower Poetry (1991) cover art by Kim Davis

INTERNATIONAL POETRY

Like a Zulu birth
some poems
arrive quietly
and slip smoothly
into the rhythm around them

Other poems are more like
an Italian birth
full of agonizing screams
demanding the full attention
of everyone

Some poems refuse
to sit on the paper
and struggle to remain hidden
and secret
and come forth into the world
only by a violent Caesarean birth

—Elka Ruth Enola
