POSSIBILITY

by Norman L. Brown
Ontario, Canada

A fisherman stalking heron-like
Dapples the surface of shallow pools.
His graphite rod as crisp as a pencil mark
Snaps tapered line and leader.
The fly drops silent onto vacant pools.

The fish have gone, all is done:
The better time, the summer sun.
Like raindrops in the dust,
Or the possibility of us—
All have flown.
