THE SANTA CLAUS CONSPIRACY

by Ted Plantos
(1943-2001)
Canada

Santa Claus,
you are no longer
the grand do-gooder
we all thought you were
THE BIG GREEN MONSTER
has sucked you in-
to its mouth of Chargex plates
and the sleigh bells
we hear ringing
are strangely similar
to cash registers
Santa Claus,
you are a corporate
masquerade: a myth
become a swindle
Santa Claus,
you have sold out
Your elves work for less
than the minimum wage
The North Pole is a front
for tinsel splattered
department stores
Santa Claus,
you are not the socialist
we all thought you were …
so take off your
Karl Marx beard
and come clean
We know about the bribes
accepted under tables
Santa Claus,
come clean before
we investigate
with a royal commission
Santa Claus,
Richard Nixon
has been condemned for less
Santa Claus,
the hoax is over

From Christmas Wears Many Faces edited by Laura Baldwin, 1980
