MIDNIGHT CAT

by Betty Sanders Garner
Ontario, Canada

By the moon’s white light:
the neighbourhood stray
hungry eyes devouring
my fishpond full of stars

I open a can of tuna
place it on the step
outside the door

Tin grates on concrete
as his velvet tongue
cleans every scrap of fish
from the can

He looks up at the window
touches all the bare places
inside me and swiftly
melts into the night
