            Escarpment XIV, by Al Kulpa

(untitled)

by Stephen Threlkeld

This ancient cliff
Carved by great forces
Ten thousand years ago.
From massive glacier
To wide and fast running river,
And then to be enslaved
In one generation,
Emasculated by civilisation,
While watched by motherless trees
As they stand in silent accusation.
The land hammered by
A new force into orderliness
Tidiness and dullness.
A force that is as blind as it is great
And as sinister as it is blind.
