Neighbours, by Al Kulpa

Neighbours

by Chris Butler

No one has glimpsed the new neighbours yet
They keep their windows clouded
as if privacy were that easy

Shortly after the “ sold ” sign disappeared
overall-clad student crew crawled out of the woodwork
Proceeded to paint the house sky-blue
Stained window frames cloud white
Which blended home right into horizon

There is no name on the new azure mailbox
yet the flyers little Jimmy delivers don’t accumulate
Just brash clouds, swooping low
brush dew across blue siding
displaying an ethereal curiosity

No one has seen or heard of rain for weeks
The new neighbours’ grass has faded to brown
Their hose and sprinkler must still be packed

Mrs. Kulpa took over a coffee cake last Sunday
certain someone would be there to answer
the knock of a generous neighbour
She even went to the trouble of icing it
until cake was literally floating on a cloud

The Kulpas ate cake for several days
For the neighbours’ door remained as unanswered
as all the neighbours’ unasked questions

Late at night when sky and house have darkened
when moonbeams push through clouded windows
they find the owner chuckling in a slowly rocking chair
Pouring out a cool glass of water from cloudy pitcher
aware that his neighbours have a penchant for illusions
